Tongariro Mountain Biking Adventure

While most visitors head to the Central North Island to tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on foot, the real secret is that the best way to experience this volcanic landscape is on two wheels. Mountain biking in the Tongariro region is an exciting way to explore the region.

From the rugged, backcountry grit of the Tongariro Forest to the flowing singletracks of Taupō, the region offers a diverse range of riding that standard tourist brochures often miss. Here is your guide to the must-ride tracks in and around Tongariro, Turangi, and Taupō.

1. The Rugged Heart: Tongariro & Turangi

The riding here is defined by native beech forests and the raw power of the Tongariro River. It’s a mix of family-friendly trails and "bucket list" epic New Zealand adventures.

The 42nd Traverse (Grade 3-4):

Often cited as one of the best adventure rides in the North Island. The 42nd Traverse is a 46km journey through the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area follows old logging tracks. Its a challenging mountain bike track for experienced cyclists, however, the amazing views over the Tongariro National Park makes up all the sweat and energy expended along the way. Expect long, rutted downhills, challenging stream crossings, and some of the most remote volcanic views in the country.

The journey can take from 4-7 hours on bike or 1-2 days if you take the adventure by foot, starting at Kapoors Road and following the track to Ohinetonga Road, is best for both walkers and bikers as there is more downhill that way.

Pro Tip: Always check the weather before heading in; this track can become a serious undertaking in the rain with the possibility of slips.

Tree Trunk Gorge (Grade 3-4):

For those who love a picturesque challenge, this mountain bike track weaves through Kaimanawa Forest Park and takes you through classic beech forest and over two impressive gorges.

There are two starting off points at the Urchin Campsite off Kaimanawa Road or from Tree Trunk Gorge Road, which is the closest to Tongariro Holiday Park. It’s technical, punchy, and incredibly rewarding for intermediate riders.

Pro Tip: This track is also one to be careful of during and after heavy rain. The track can be slippery, and there are a few small river crossings to negotiate.

Tongariro River Trail (Grade 2):

Perfect for a "recovery day" or family-friendly cycle, 20 minutes drive from our Tongariro accommodation. This 15km loop starts in Turangi and follows the banks of the world-famous trout fishing river. It’s mostly flat with two large swing bridges that offer fantastic photo ops. The most challenging part is also the most rewarding as you climb to the Tongariro River Lookout there are great views of the mountains in Tongariro National Park

If you have time, stop at the Tongariro National Trout Centre along the way, which is a welcome break for little legs, where you can explore the museum and hatchery after a bit of lunch.

2. The Great Lake Trails: Taupō’s Crown Jewel

About 20 minutes drive from Taupo, or an hour's drive north from Tongariro Holiday Park, the Great Lake Trails offer over 70km of purpose-built singletrack. Built on free-draining volcanic pumice, these trails are rideable year-round—even in the depths of winter.

W2K (Whakaipo to Kinloch):

A classic section starting at Whakaipo Bay. It features a steady climb to a headland that provides sweeping views across Lake Taupō to the peaks of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu. The descent into Kinloch is a fast, flowing reward for your efforts.

Waihaha Section:

This is the most remote part of the trail. You’ll ride past towering volcanic rock cliffs and the spectacular Tieke Falls. Many riders choose to book a boat shuttle to turn this into a one-way epic, finishing with a scenic cruise back across the lake.

3. Craters Mountain Bike Park

If you prefer a "choose your own adventure" style of riding, Craters MTB Park in Wairakei Forest (just north of Taupō) is the destination for you. The best part about this park is it's rideable in all seasons & weather due to its quick draining soil.

With over 50km of trails ranging from Grade 2 (easy) to Grade 5 (technical), there is something for everyone, and however much time you have available. The park is famous for its "rollercoaster" style tracks like Coaster and Mr. & Mrs., which make use of the natural gullies to create effortless flow.

Plan Your Trip

The beauty of this region is the ability to base yourself at the Tongariro Holiday Park and access a completely different style of riding every day.

Ready to hit the trails? Make sure your bike is serviced and your layers are packed—the mountain weather changes fast, but the views are always worth it.
