Whakapapa Nature Walk and Tawhai Falls: The Best Short Walks Near Mt Ruapehu
The
Tongariro Alpine Crossing gets all the headlines, and rightly so as it is one of the great day hikes of the world. But not every day at Tongariro National Park needs to be a 20-kilometre slog across a volcano. Some of the most beautiful and memorable experiences in the park are short, accessible, and completely free and these are the kind of walks you can do in a couple of hours before lunch, or string together for a full day of gentle exploring.
If you're based in Whakapapa Village or passing through on your way to or from the Crossing, here is your guide to the best short walks in the area ranging from the famous Tawhai Falls to the Whakapapa Nature Walk, Silica Rapids, and the spectacular Taranaki Falls loop.
Tawhai Falls - Gollum's Pool (15 minutes return)
Let's start with the most photographed spot in the area. Tawhai Falls is a 13-metre waterfall located a short drive south of Whakapapa Village on SH48, and it is instantly recognizable to any Lord of the Rings fan as Gollum's Pool where the scene between Faramir and his archers watch Gollum fishing in the river below.
The walk itself is as easy as it gets: a flat, well-maintained 0.5 km return track through mountain toatoa and beech forest that takes around 15 minutes return. The track leads first to a viewing platform near the top of the falls, where you look out over the water as it tumbles over the edge of an ancient lava flow, and then continues down steps to the river's edge for a closer view of the falls and pool.
The water color here is striking. A vivid blue-green that photographs beautifully. It's popular for good reason, but a visit at dusk or early morning often rewards you with the place almost to yourself. Not suitable for prams, but an easy walk for most ages.
Whakapapa Nature Walk (45 minutes return)
Starting right from Whakapapa Village, the Whakapapa Nature Walk is a flat, easy loop through native bush that takes around 45 minutes to complete. It is one of the most accessible introductions to the national park, with information panels along the way explaining the ecology, geology, and cultural significance of the landscape.
It is a lovely, peaceful walk. It's the kind that works well as a morning warm-up before the Crossing, or as a gentle wind-down the day after. The native birdlife in the bush here is excellent, with tui, bellbird, and fantail commonly spotted. A great option for families with young children or anyone who wants to be in the park without the physical commitment of a longer track.
Silica Rapids (2.5 hours return)
A little longer and a little more special, the Silica Rapids walk from Whakapapa Village follows the Whakapapanui Stream through native bush to one of the most visually unusual sights in the park. The stream runs a striking rusty gold color from iron deposits leaching out of the rocks along its valley. At the rapids themselves, thick cream-colored deposits of silica coat the streambed being the result of aluminum silicates leaching from the ancient lava flow at the head of the valley.
It sounds technical, but standing there looking at golden rivers, cream-coloured boulders, and the volcanic peaks above, it is genuinely otherworldly. The track takes around 2.5 hours return and involves some boardwalks over wetland areas and a few moderate uphill sections. Suitable for reasonably fit walkers, but not the gentlest option in the area.
Taranaki Falls (2 hours return)
The most popular short walk in the Whakapapa area and a firm favourite with families, the Taranaki Falls loop is a 6 km track starting 100 metres below the Whakapapa Visitor Centre at Ngauruhoe Place. The walk takes around 2 hours and passes through tussock, alpine shrubland, and beech forest before arriving at the falls themselves.
Taranaki Falls are magnificent extending to a 20-metre curtain of water plunging over the edge of a lava flow that erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago into a stunning boulder-ringed pool below. The scale of the falls and the drama of the setting make it one of the most rewarding two-hour walks in New Zealand. From below the falls there are spectacular views into the water-worn gorges of the Wairere Stream, and on a clear day the volcanic peaks above frame everything perfectly.
The track forms a loop with the two entrances sitting about 50 metres apart on Ngauruhoe Terrace. Walking it clockwise means you reach the base of the falls first, which is the recommended approach. There is a reasonable amount of stair climbing on the return leg, so allow a little extra time if you're with younger children or less confident walkers.
Combining the walks to making a perfect day in Whakapapa
If you want to make a full day of it without committing to the Alpine Crossing, these walks combine beautifully. Start with the Whakapapa Nature Walk in the morning while it's cool and the birds are active. Drive down to Tawhai Falls mid-morning for a short stop wherethe light is excellent and it's rarely busy before 10am. Return to Whakapapa for a coffee at the Visitor Centre before heading out on the Taranaki Falls loop after lunch. If you have energy to spare, Silica Rapids makes a wonderful late afternoon addition.
The total walking time across all four walks is around 5 hours, easily spread across a full day with stops, coffee, and lunch in between.
Practical Information
All of these walks are free and no booking is required. The Whakapapa Visitor Centre is open daily and the staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and excellent at recommending the right walk for your group's ability and the day's conditions. Always check weather and track conditions before heading out as most of the times the alpine environment can change quickly.
