While the Tongariro Crossing is the most famous trek in the Ruapehu District, there are a wide range of both shorter and longer tracks to explore.
The Tongariro Crossing is actually one part of a larger traverse called the Northern Circuit. It is a challenging 3 to 4 day walk that rewards adventurous travellers with simply stunning scenery. There are 4 huts along the way.
Unless you are a well-experienced mountaineer, summer months are the best and safest time of year to experience the Northern Circuit.
The Round the Mountain track is the name given to the 4 to 6 day trek around Mount Ruapehu. For those seeking solitude, magnificent mountain views and a more remote backcountry experience, the Round The Mountain Track is ideal.
Treks of less than a day include Tawhai Falls, Taranaki Falls, Tama Lakes and Silica Rapids.
Local guides also take groups of people to the summit of Mount Ruapehu to see the famous Crater Lake. From the top of the chairlifts, you will climb to an altitude of 2,670 metres.
And a short walk (around 10 minutes) from Tongariro Holiday Park itself will take you to our 'very own' waterfall!
