For experienced mountaineers and rock climbers, the mountains and ridges of this region are a veritable playground. Many operators take guided climbing adventures, including abseiling around rugged lava crags.
There is an excellent range of snow and ice climbs on Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngaruhoe. The Chiming Bells, Cathedral Rocks and Girdlestone are just a few on Mount Ruapehu.
There are two indoor rock climbing walls also within a short drive from Tongariro Holiday Park.
